Transforming Waste into Resources by Collecting E-waste
ALBA IWS’s WEEE · PARK, located in Tuen Mun’s EcoPark, is a state-of-the-art Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) treatment and recycling facility in Hong Kong. WEEE · PARK has achieved the Final Gold grading of BEAM Plus New Buildings (V1.2) in 2022. The facility incorporates various green building features such as solar power generation system and increased natural lighting to reduce carbon emissions.
Many WEEE must be disposed of properly in order to minimise their harm on the environment and human health. At the same time, WEEE contains valuable materials such as iron, copper, aluminum, and plastic. Through detoxification, dismantling and cracking, over 80% of raw materials can be recovered in WEEE · PARK for remanufacturing, to save natural resources and help reduce carbon emissions, as well as to promote circular economy. As of February 2022, ALBA IWS has recycled over 3 million pieces of WEEE, indirectly reducing an estimated 200,000 tonnes of carbon emissions and producing 61,900 tonnes of recovered components.
Renewing Lives with Refurbished Appliances
While all collected e-waste is shipped to WEEE · PARK for proper treatment and recycling, ALBA IWS will also select some of the items for refurbishment and donate to people in need. ALBA IWS donation campaign spans across different corners of Hong Kong. Back in 2018, ALBA IWS organised a donation campaign at Tai O after the super typhoon Mangkhut hit the island seriously. ALBA IWS volunteers took a long way to ship the refurbished refrigerators and washing machines to the remote district, providing assistance to the affected households, and extending the lifespan of appliances to reduce waste. As part of the community, ALBA IWS pays extra care to the vulnerable groups including the ethnic minorities and the elderly living alone. In addition to providing refurbished appliances, ALBA IWS also visits their home and learn about their needs. To support ethnic minorities, ALBA IWS welcomes them to join the team of WEEE recycling. Also, ALBA IWS have launched the Ambassador Programme which provides training and career advancement for ethnic minorities. ALBA IWS actively collaborates with various businesses and organisations on donation and volunteering activities, with the aim to contributing to the society through diversified
Empowering Communities with Environmental Education
To raise public awareness of environmental protection, ALBA IWS has established WEEE·PARK Guided Tours to educate visitors. Through an online booking system, visitors can participate in guided tours of WEEE·PARK for free. From refurbishment workshop to unloading bay & buffer storage area to processing lines, visitors can check out different functions of WEEE · PARK during the guided tour and learn about the proper handling of e-waste and its transformation into resources. After an interesting tour, WEEE·PARK has set up an interactive zone to introduce the processing capacity and the benefits of reducing greenhouse gas emissions through recycling of electronic appliances. The interactive zone also exhibits real recycled materials to educate the public about the importance of recycling of electronic appliances.
Building a Sustainable Future for Today and Tomorrow
ALBA IWS will continue to deepen its recycling business and promote a circular economy.
